Two pilgrims participating in the Chardham Yatra died on Sunday, the opening day of the 2026 pilgrimage season, reportedly due to suspected asphyxia. However, doctors said the exact cause of death is yet to be ascertained.
The first incident was reported during the day when a 65-year-old man from Nashik lost consciousness while proceeding towards the Yamunotri Temple. He was taken to a nearby Primary Health Centre, where doctors declared him brought dead.

The second deceased was a middle-aged woman from Indore, Madhya Pradesh. She passed away in the Barkot area while travelling to the Yamunotri Temple in Uttarkashi district.

According to Dr. Hardev Singh Panwar of the Janki Chatti Health Centre, the deceased, identified as 40-year-old Pratibha Mishra from Indore, was brought to the hospital late Sunday night in an unconscious state.
She had already died by the time she reached the facility. He said the police were informed, and further proceedings are underway to hand over the body to the family.
Earlier in the day, as per information from the Janki Chatti Primary Health Centre, another deceased pilgrim was identified as 65-year-old Uday Gajanan Tambe, a resident of Nashik, Maharashtra.
He was brought dead to the facility by a Nepali labourer at around 3:45 PM on Sunday. The body was examined by doctors and later handed over to the police for further legal formalities.
According to doctors, the deaths of the two pilgrims mark the first tragedy of this year’s Chardham Yatra, occurring on its opening day.
